Joomla vs. WordPress– Getting under the Hood with Joomla vs. WordPress

Joomla vs. WordPress

In the Joomla vs. WordPress debate, there are people who argue both sides passionately. In order to make a choice for yourself, you need to understand your own needs and then learn the pros and cons of each of these systems to determine which is the better fit.

Many people associate WordPress with the blogging community, and rightly so. WordPress was originally a blogging platform that over the years has grown into a more sophisticated content management system. One advantage of WordPress is that makes it very easy to setup and manage a blog oriented website quickly. They have a stronghold in the blog community. The latest version of WordPress has many other features that make it a solid content management system. For one, it enables you to have a complex menu system with various sections and pages under each. It also has a robust plug-in architecture which means you can add features to your WordPress site by installing free or low-cost add-ins. WordPress has a wide variety of add-ons and it is very easy to search for and install add-ins right from within the WordPress management console.

Joomla, on the other hand, was built from the ground up to be a true content management system. As a result, it is relatively easy for developers to modify or add features to Joomla and the software was built to handle sites with many sections and subsections. Like WordPress, Joomla has a plug-in architecture however you must go to a separate website to search and review plug-ins. On the plus side, there are extremely robust plug-ins for Joomla, many of which don’t exist in WordPress.

To summarize, both Joomla and WordPress are great content management systems and they each have pros and cons. WordPress is generally considered easier to use except when it comes to managing sites that have many different sections with multiple pages in each section. Joomla has a little steeper learning curve but is developer friendly and has some more robust plug-ins.

In the Joomla vs WordPress debate, you need to understand the strengths of each as well as your own needs and objectives so you can make a choice that is right for you.
